Identify the person, not only the firm
Ask for the full name of the attorney who would be responsible for your matter and the state where that attorney is licensed. A firm name, office address, or directory category does not establish an individual lawyer’s license.
Check the licensing authority
Search the attorney’s name through the licensing agency for the state where the lawyer says they practice. Match identifying details carefully, and use the agency’s contact information if names are similar or a record is unclear.
Review public status information
Look for current eligibility to practice and any public discipline information available from that authority. The scope of public records differs by jurisdiction; an empty search result is a reason to clarify the name or jurisdiction, not proof of misconduct.
Confirm fit with the firm
Ask whether the firm currently handles your type of injury matter, serves the relevant location, and has capacity to review it. Ask who will do the day-to-day work and who will appear for major proceedings if a lawsuit becomes necessary.
Keep your own verification record
Save the date, licensing source, attorney name, and questions you asked. Recheck details before signing an agreement, since directory and licensing information can change.
Sources and verification
Source material was reviewed in September 2026. Check current information with the relevant authority; rules and procedures can change.
